January 2026. Week 3.

·

Okay, back on time and back on track this week!

Obviously a short week after last weeks last update, but still plenty of time to get started on some new TV series.

First up, a belated start to Series 5 of Slow Horses.  Gary Oldman remains an absolutely disgusting gem intros, as he had been in the previous series. Good to see the writers starting out dealing with the aftermath of the last series deaths and revelations, and this seasons plot starts off in a graphic manner, so good to have a favourite back. Just a shame this is scheduled to Beth last series of this show.

Two new ones, fresh for 2026 next.  Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is, as the title suggests, the latest spin-off of the GoT franchise. Refreshingly, it looks like it own’t be based on the tale son dynasty and grand intrigue from the master series, and it sHouse of the Dragon sister spin-off, instead following the adventures of aspiring hedge knight, Sir Duncan the Tall. I haven’t read the novellas this series is based on, but episode 1 starts well, the main characters are likeable and the production values are high, so so far so good.

Lastly, Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy.  I’ve been a Trek fan since the The Next Generation was first broadcast. Through all of TNG. Through DS9 and Voyager. Through the movies. Through Enterprise (partly). Even through whatever Discovery was…

I thought, with the success of Star Trek: Brave New Worlds, that the franchise was steering away from the worst elements of Discovery, to a brighter future. But Academy doesn’t really seem to be that, unfortunately. Maybe it’s because it’s all a bit ‘young adult’-y, maybe it’s just the casting, and the wholly uncharismatic leads. Maybe it’s the way this far-future has become too ‘hand=wavy’ with the science part of the science-fiction. I don’t know. But 2 episodes in, it doesn’t look like this one is a keeper.

Still, on my own science-fiction note, there’s a new electric car being delivered on Monday. Time to drive the future!
