STEVE JAMES

Hello, I'm Steve James (no, not this one or this one, or this one, and certainly not this one) and this is my personal website.

Back in the 90's everyone on the internet had their own website where they could publish whatever they wanted. Life updates. Cat photos. Extended rants on why Star Trek is far superior to Star Wars. Which is, of course, true. Then we all sold ourselves out to the social media giants who in turn sold our lives to advertisers and algorithms.

Increasingly, returning to owning and controlling what you publish on the internet feels like the right way to be going again. Lot's of people have written far more eloquently than me about why you should have your own website. You can read some of them here, and here, and here.

All of these in their turn have inspired me to learn how to build my own website. From first principles, in plain vanilla HTML & CSS. So this website is also where I get to play around and experiment with what I've learnt. So expect the design of this page to change, and bits of it to be a bit wonky, and maybe even a bit broken. Hopefully over time, it'll be a lot less broken, but I expect it will still stay a little wonky..

Having said all that about the problems with using social media, and the importance of owning your own little place on the internet, it's still good to go out and play and share with others. Luckily, it's still possible to find social networks out there that aren't owned by big corporations or nazi-sympathising tech-billionaires. So to that end, whilst for now you'll still find me on Facebook and Instagram, increasingly you'll find me hanging out in the Fediverse!

To paraphrase one of Robert De Niros most renowned works, "I like to watch stuff and read things".
I use the services below to track the music I listen to, the films & TV shows I watch, and the books I read. You can find and follow me on any of these services, and you can see live updates to these services on my Feeds page

So what have we got down here at the bottom of the page? Well, these are the Slash Pages of course! You can read more about the concept of slash pages here, but mainly they're just a fun little collection of pages of random stuff that doesn't necessarily fit anywhere else. But everything can find it's place somewhere, so maybe they fit just perfectly down here after all.
